A further two hours drive by road through barren wilderness Lhasa, the capital and home to the famous Potala Palace unfolds. Day 01: Transfer to airport for Kathmandu / Lhasa flight. Upon arrival, meet by our Tibetan representatives and transfer to your hotel in Lhasa.
You will take a flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa which will take about an hour. The flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa is spectacular offering prodigious views of various Himalayas including Mount Everest (8848 m). Upon arrival at Gonggar airport, meet our Tibetan representative and after immigration formalities, he will transfer you to the respective hotel in Lhasa. The Lhasa Gonggar Airport is 61km southwest of Lhasa. It takes about couple of hours to reach the old city.
Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world and is the second most populous city on the Tibetan Plateau after Xining. The city has been the religious and administrative capital of Tibet since the mid-17th century. It contains many culturally significant Tibetan Buddhist sites such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Norbulingka Palaces. It is located at an altitude of 3,490 meters (11,450 ft above sea level), thus directly flying from Kathmandu to Lhasa may cause altitude sickness. So, you are advised to take rest and take it easy. Drink plenty of fluids and let your body get used to Lhasa’s high altitude. The overnight stay will be at the hotel in Lhasa.
Day 02: Full day Sightseeing tour including: Sera Monastery, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Bazaar.
On the following day, after breakfast you will be shortly briefed by the tour guide about the day’s program. An experienced guide will take you on a tour to Sera Monastery, Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor Bazaar. With a relaxed pace to allow for the effects of altitude, explore this fantastic city on the roof of the world. The spiritual heart of Tibet is the Jokhang Temple and every morning is full of life as pilgrims bring offerings of butter and barley flour. Jokhang temple provides yet another glimpse of the rich Tibetan canter of Lhasa. Barkhor bazaar is a circular street around the Jokhang Temple where you can enjoy bargaining with the local Tibetan vendors for the handicrafts which are rare to be seen elsewhere in the entire world. At the famous Sera Monastery; you will get an insight into the important aspects of Tibetan Buddhism. You can also transfer to these areas by mini buses which operate in areas such as Norbulingka, Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery, and other nearby sites. Most of these are also on public bus lines. After sightseeing, transfer to hotel and spend overnight in hotel.
Day 03: Full day sightseeing tour of Potala Palace and Drepung Monastery.
After an early breakfast, brace yourself up for witnessing few of the most beautiful architectural wonders in entire Tibet. The imposing structure of the palace dominates the landscape of Lhasa. As you are guided through the ancient chambers of the palace, you get to see Tibetan art at its best. The Potala Palace has a vast array of intricate Tibetan murals and beautiful statues. You will also get to view the tombs of the eight Dalai Lamas. Later in the day you will visit the beautifully landscaped Drepung Monastery where you can observe nuns and monks chanting and performing religious discourses. After the day’s tour is over, you are escorted back to your hotel for a well-earned rest. The overnight stay will be at the hotel in Lhasa.
Day 04: Transfer to airport for your flight to Kathmandu or other onward destination.
After the best Tibetan cuisine breakfast, you will be escorted to the Gonggar airport for your return flight to Kathmandu. From there, you can either connect the flight to your home town or you can also spend some time in Kathmandu visiting its famous heritage sites which are listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
